VELscope is a handheld device that uses a special fluorescent lamp to identify tissue anomalies and early pathology within the mouth that would otherwise be undetectable by the unaided eye. The entire procedure is painless and lasts only 1 to 2 minutes. By detecting cancer at such an early stage, this FDA-approved screening system has exponentially increased the survival rate for oral cancer.

If oral cancer symptoms or abnormal lesions are noted, we may recommend a biopsy to definitively determine whether or not it is oral cancer. Further treatment will be advised based on the biopsy results. We strongly encourage patients to have routine dental exams and oral cancer screening each year.
